MOWS asks for communities help

The Gifford Foundation has offered Meals on Wheels of Syracuse (MOWS) a challenge grant in the amount of $3,000. For every dollar that MOWS raises, up to $3,000, for the Client Assistance Program, the foundation will match at 100 percent.
The Client Assistance Program provides funding to feed individuals who are disabled due to accident, illness and/or injury and in need of nourishing home-delivered meals. In an article printed on Dec. 29, it was reported that MOWS needed the community's help in securing temporary funds for the Client Assistance Program to bridge the gap between the remaining funds from a two-year grant until a new funding source could be obtained in July 2008.
The community's response has been genuine and very supportive. In December 2007, MOWS needed at least $16,000 for the program to continue feeding its current disabled recipients. At the end of January 2008, MOWS reports raising just under $11,000. Now, MOWS is asking for the community's help in securing the remaining funds needed to continue the program from May until the end of June 2008 with a dollar for dollar match from The Gifford Foundation.
"What an opportunity The Gifford Foundation is providing MOWS to accelerate reaching the goal. I know our generous community will respond to this challenge," said Mason Kaufman, executive director of MOWS.
Meals on Wheels of Syracuse was established as the fourth chapter of Meals on Wheels in the United States in 1959. The program is committed to administering nourishing meals to the homebound: seniors; people with disabilities; nutritionally at-risk individuals and people recovering from accident and illness.
Since its inception, MOW of Syracuse has seen an increase of meals served of three percent annually with 31,000 meals served the first year. By the year 2000, MOW of Syracuse provided 195,000 meals to 850 clients and in 2006, more than 225,000 meals to 900 clients.
Today, this organization is serving well over 200,000 meals per year. With projections pointing to continued growth of the senior population, we can anticipate a growing demand for home delivered meals in the years to come. Meals on Wheels is committed to its mission to ensure that "no senior goes hungry."
