PAINTERS AND ALLIED TRADES RECRUIT APPRENTICES



Syracuse, NY - The Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee for the International Union of Painters and Allied Trades, District Council 4 (Syracuse), will conduct recruitment from February 5, 2008 through January 14, 2009, State Labor Commissioner M. Patricia Smith announced today. Three applicants will be accepted for each of the following trades: painter, decorator, paperhanger; glazier; and dry wall taper.
Applications can be obtained the first Tuesday of each month, from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., at the IUPAT Training Center, 219 Lyons Road (Route 14), Geneva. Applications may also be obtained from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., at the following location: 615 W. Genesee St., Syracuse. Applications are also available during business hours daily from any Labor Department local office. Completed applications must be returned in person to the Geneva address between 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. on the first Tuesday of the month or to the 615 Genesee St., Syracuse address between 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. on the second Wednesday of the month.
The committee requires that applicants:
- Be at least 17 years old.
- Have a high school or general equivalency diploma.
- Have a driver's license -- apprentices will be required to drive company vehicles.
- Have reliable transportation to job sites throughout Central New York and related instruction in Geneva at one-week intervals.
- Sign an affidavit stating they are physically able to do the work, which includes heavy lifting and working above 35 feet.

Apprentice programs registered with the Department of Labor must meet standards established by the Commissioner. Under state law, sponsors of programs cannot discriminate against applicants because of race, creed, color, national origin, age, sex, disability or marital status. Women and minorities are encouraged to submit applications for apprenticeship programs. Sponsors of programs are required to adopt affirmative action plans for the recruitment of women and minorities.
